“It’s not just me,” Christian Bale says
“Any role that anybody gets, it’s only because he’s passed on it beforehand. It doesn’t matter what anyone tells you. It doesn’t matter how friendly you are with the directors. All those people that I’ve worked with multiple times, they all offered every one of those roles to him first.
“Literally, he gets to choose everything he does."

He can only do so many movies a year so there are a lot of parts left to do. He also works primarily with Scorsese and again there are a lot of other great directors to work with. This feels like very privileged problems for Mr. Bale.
Maybe he shouldn't bitch out crew members like cinematographers and he'd get more offers.

Leonardo is the last movie star. Maybe older people don’t understand it but millennials love Leonardo. A movie like “The Revenant” couldn’t have made as much money as it did with another actor.
Leo generates the right publicity for all his movies - most of them are automatically inducted into award season because of him, critics love him, and he’s got better chances at the box office than anyone.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 7, 2022 12:03 PM |
Are we to believe that that asshole, David O. Russell, wanted Leo in his movies before Bale? Bale has done 3 movies with that jerk, that I know of. I don't think Leo's management would !et Leo put up with the shit that Russell likes to inflict on some of the actors in his movies. He sounds like he's bitching, just to bitch. Which is normal for him, I guess. It doesn't sound like it, but I like Bale as an actor more than Leo. Hollywood rich bitch bullshit. Just shut up and act.

It's a weird business. He doesn't impress me at all and his presence in a role has no draw for me.'i'll watch just about anything with Nicole Kidman or Claire Danes or Cate Blanchett or Kate Winslet or Michael Keaton or Morgan Freeman, but Leo? He has no gravitas to me. Yet he's 'king of the world' as a former teen pinup with flat delivery.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 12, 2022 11:32 AM |
Leo is a terrific actor. He’s unpopular with DL-dergays, whose idea of male movie stardom hasn’t advanced much past Tyrone Power.
He was great in Don’t Look Up playing an uncharacteristic role. He reminds me of Gregory Peck - not necessarily a method actor, but he brings an intensity and dignity to his roles that is all his own. I also respect the fact that he doesn’t do superhero or Sci-fi movies.
I like Bale, but a good share of his roles have been little more than a bundle of tics masquerading as a performance.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 12, 2022 12:45 PM |
I thought Don't Look Up was a C-minus at best. It does prove that movies are a director's medium as we so often hear, because the success or failure of a satire is a tenuous balance that relies almost entirely on mood and atmosphere and I feel like this movie could have been a B, maybe, if directed differently—but wow, it was surprisingly bad IMO. Just missed the mark with every scene.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 12, 2022 12:50 PM |
I thought Bale was the M of this generation, like Margot robbie and Viola Davis. They get all the roles of their demographic, like they're not more talented actors in Hollywood.

by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 12, 2022 1:39 PM |
If Bale is bitching, he may have a right.
To know that every film you’ve done since making it big was not offered to you first - even with directors you’ve worked with before - would irk me a bit.
To be standing there on-set, taking direction, realizing at least once or twice throughout the process that ‘the guy talking to me right now basically ‘settled’ to work with me.’
I mean it probably might be considered anyway if one is being realistic.
But to know for a fact that every script you’re being offered had some other guy’s - the same other guy’s fingerprints on it? Every time?
Yeah, that could suck a bit.

Nah. He was very cute in Catch Me If You Can; his face was pretty much the same as in Titanic, and he still had that boyish charm. His comedic timing in that film was great, but in the more serious scenes, I thought he was too obviously acting. Titanic was not a perfect performance imo, but overall I found him more natural and believable than in anything he's done since.
And trust me, while I admittedly found 90s/early 2000s Leo way hotter than the "modern-day" version, I really tried to like modern-day Leo's acting. I can separate the actor from the man. I still remember watching The Great Gatsby a few years after it came out, and really TRYING to like his performance ... it was impossible. I found him so wooden, unnatural and irritating that I almost felt second-hand embarrassment for him.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 13, 2022 5:18 AM |
R39 I don’t know. I do agree be was less conscious and more free spirited in the 90’s but I like a lot of performances he gave post 90’s. The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and yes The Great Gatsby. I recently watched the Redford version and found Redford so bland and forgettable in the role. DiCaprio brought Gatsby to life for me.

by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 13, 2022 5:22 AM |
I’ll agree to disagree because I think he’s totally effortless in Catch Me If You Can, including the dramatic scenes. It was a perfect role for him because he was basically playing himself, a boy who never grows up.

Too true, X2.
di Caprio is a terrible actor, always working so very hard, and always getting caught doing so. He's not so much acting as showing effort.
He and Matt Damon evidently attended the same school of acting in which the leading man mist display every emotion with contortions of the face, rendering visible the inner tickings of their brain. With both of them it's like watching a fat man on a hot day in a sweltering Laotian toilet take a painful two-hour long shit. Filmed from the neck up, but with all the emoting and grunting and sweating and furling of brows, one might think every line if dialogue, every passing thought was the equivalent of shitting cinder blocks. For two hours.
Not a pretty picture. Not good acting.

Leo has overseas box office draw and a rather good domestic draw. This, and only this, is the reason he is the top dog of Hollywood. Titanic sealed the deal for him as a box office draw. Every since ALL of his movies have made profits. Not many actors can say that.

I can't imagine young Bale playing the aw-shucks wide-eyed Jack in Titanic. I don't know if he and Cameron could get along. Bale is thoughtful and Cameron makes his actors have all the depth of paper dolls.
But Bale might have been much better in Romeo + Juliet. I couldn't take young, pretty Leo seriously as a gangster or as a person who comfortably fit Shakespeares words into his mouth.

River’s a big if. If he had managed to beat the drug problem, AND sustain the creative level he was at, we’d be talking about “Leo who?”

I think River was more likely to be in competition with Jude Law rather than DiCaprio. I know there was some talk that he was being considered for Titanic but there’s no guarantee he would have taken it. As for Basketball Diaries, he was too old and Total Eclipse probably would have been just as unmemorable with Phoenix as it was with DiCaprio. The Beach is one he may have gone after.
I could see Phoenix in roles like Gattaca and eXIstenz and Road to Perdition. I also think he would have been competing more with Johnny Depp and working with directors like Terry Gilliam.

I'm trying to imagine Matt McConaughey as Jack and I keep hearing that thick Texas accent saying "Well Alright" or whatever his catchphrase is. Casting him would have been ............... a choice.

The story I’ve heard is that Gloria Steinem (Christian Bale’s stepmother, having been married to Bale’s father for a short period before his death) reached out to DiCaprio and convinced him that the role of Patrick Bateman wasn’t suitable for someone with DiCaprio’s sizable teen fanbase, R99. I’m not sure where that originates, but have seen it printed several times.
Alternately (and more probably) American Psycho couldn’t meet DiCaprio’s post-Titanic salary demands. He was paid $20m for The Beach, which came out around the same time.

Christian Bale might get first dibs on scripts if he got rid of that goddamn creepy mole/wart by his eye.
It's distracting.
DiCaprio is a minor talent. All you have to do is watch Gangs of New York. Day-Lewis, in all his divine hamminess, steals the movie. Then again, he's stealing it from DiCaprio being wooden and Diaz who is just out of her depth.

Maybe it can't be removed without causing a scar. Isn't it usually removed in post-production? Or is he shot in a way that minimizes it?

I no longer want to see Leo in anything.
Christian Bale is a fantastic actor. I always enjoy watching him.
Furthermore, I would give a several toes for a night with Bale and I would give those same toes to not have to have sex with DiCaprio.

R110: Rumor has it Scorsese wanted another actress for the role of Jenny but Diaz fucked Weinstein and got the part.

R113 That story is very likely....I mean, why else is she in that movie?
I like her but she's a light comedic actress and totally unsuited for that role.
